What happens to pets if their owner is no longer able to care for them?
The Animal Police Foundation’s new program provides an opportunity for pet owners to plan ahead for their pets’ future — offering them security even for the rest of their lives.
Why is this important?
In Hungary, a great many homes have at least one pet, and in many cases they are the companions of elderly owners.
One of the basic principles of responsible pet ownership is that we take care of our pets’ well-being throughout every stage of their lives – even when we are no longer able to do so ourselves. Illness, hospital treatment or even the owner’s death can create a situation where the animal’s care is left unresolved. In other countries it is already common practice for owners to plan ahead for their animals’ future, but in Hungary this is still less widespread.
Since animals legally count as “objects”, they need to be specifically provided for in the probate process, which is often left out – so animals often end up with relatives or acquaintances, or unfortunately in a shelter, if they are taken in at all.
The Animal Police Foundation helps in this situation
The Forever Guardian Program launched by our Foundation aims to let owners decide in advance what should happen to their pets if they can no longer care for them. It is possible to set out in a contract that if the owner is no longer able to fill this role due to health reasons or death, our Foundation takes over the care of the pet.
We examine and care for the animals, and look for the best possible new home for them.
Elderly animals or those that are especially hard to rehome can stay in our care, safe for the rest of their lives.
How can this be ensured?
The agreement between the Foundation and the owner sets out exactly in which cases we step in – whether it is medical help, placement or long-term care.
In return, the owner supports the Foundation in their will or through a donation. This contribution not only secures the future of the given animal, but also helps care for other animals in need.
An important legal step
If you would like to make sure your pet ends up in good hands, please contact a lawyer and address this in your will.
We recommend including the following text:
“After my death, I entrust the placement and care of the animals in my care to the Animal Police Foundation.”
What does the Foundation provide?
– Veterinary examination – Professional, loving care – Finding a new owner suited to the animal’s needs – Lifelong care, if needed – Every donation we receive goes directly to the animals’ well-being
